FORMER Arsenal striker Jay Bothroyd believes Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is the only man capable of replacing Arsene Wenger.
Simeone is one of the most coveted managers in the game after establishing Atletico Madrid as one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The Spanish side won La Liga in 2014 and have reached the Champions League final twice in the past three years.
Wenger, meanwhile, has been criticised by large sections of the Arsenal support after winning just two trophies since 2005.
And Bothroyd, who began his career in the Gunners academy, believes Simeone should replace Wenger when the Frenchman eventually steps down.
“I do think he is still the right man for the job. The only man that I could see replacing him is Diego Simeone,” Bothroyd told Squawka. “Wenger is a top manager; he’s not stupid.
“Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in the world and he has managed to bring players through for Arsenal but now the club just want to see trophies.”
One man that has emerged as a possible successor to Wenger is Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.
Howe helped keep the Cherries in the top flight last season and is widely regarded as one of football’s best up-and-coming bosses.
But former Arsenal legend Ray Parlour reckons the Gunners job would be a step too much for him.
“I don’t think he would know enough about big foreign players to attract them,” Parlour told talkSPORT. “He is doing a wonderful job at Bournemouth and he could be a manager in the future for Arsenal, but I think it is a little bit too soon for him at the moment.”
