Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund Delegation Meets With PM Dr. Abiy Ahmed Office; Appointment of New Council Members
On September 15, 2018, a delegation of the Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund (EDTF) Council including Council Chair Prof. Alemayehu Gebre Mariam and members Dr. Bisrat Aklilu, Mr. Kassahun Kebede and Mr. Elias Wondimu met with Mr. Fitsum Arega, Chief of Staff (CoS) of H.E. Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, regarding progress on the establishment of the Fund.
The delegation updated the Prime Minister’s office on work and progress made to date and discussed its proposals for EDTF structure, governance, operations and processes to ensure maximum accountability and transparency.
The proposed structure for the Fund is derived from best practices in setting up trust funds and includes an Advisory Council (with an Executive Committee), a Governing Board, a Secretariat (headed by an Executive Director), a Trustee for the Fund and Implementing Organizations.
Following the discussions, CoS Fitsum said, “We are pleased to have the Trust Fund delegation come to Addis Ababa to provide the Prime Minister’s office with a progress report. We appreciate the collective efforts of the entire Council and the work done to date. We are hopeful that the Council will speedily complete the initial phase of its work and begin setting up the Fund so that Ethiopians the world over will make their contributions. Prime Minister Dr. Abiy extends his best wishes to the Council.”
CoS Fitsum added, “Prime Minister Abiy encourages all individuals and groups who have taken personal or group initiatives to support the Fund to cooperate with the official Trust Fund Council to avoid confusion in the public mind.”
Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed has appointed three individuals to join the Council and assist in the speedy implementation of the Fund.
Among the appointees include:
1) Haji Najib Mohammed, Manager of Engineering Services, Washington Convention Center, D.C.
2) Dr. Zaki Sheriff, Professor / Scientist, Howard University Medical School.
3) Mr. Henok Tesfaye Kebede, President and CEO of U Street Parking, Washington, D.C.
